About CorkCork, Ireland’s second largest city, is the international gateway to the southwest of the country. It is the main economic driver in the region and its metropolitan area, which boasts a population of 260,000 people, has experienced rapid growth and development in recent years. The city can offer investors a wealth of advantages; a young highly educated workforce, a clean environment, a charming atmosphere, superb sceneryand leisure facilities, first class infrastructure, including a rapidly expanding airport and a number of internationally renowned centres of learning (University College Cork, The Tyndall National Institute and the Cork Institute of Technology are all major centres of research and development). The economic profile of Cork has been transformed from its traditional roots as a seaport to emerge in the 21st Century as one of Europe’s leading centres for international trade and associated services. Cork International Airport is one of the fastest growing regional airports in Europe and has opened a new terminal in 2006, allowing it to increase its capacity from 2m passengers per annum up to 5m. More than 40 airlines provide regular scheduled and passenger services including direct daily flights to a host of European destinations . Cork is also easily accessible by road, rail and sea. In total more than €750m is being invested in the city’s transport infrastructure under the Cork Area Strategic Plan. The National Spatial Strategy has designated Cork as a gateway city, a centre for national strategic growth with the industry and infrastructure to sustain development and generate investment.
